N in a box development

We are  developing a new N gauge layout, now named Bocksley Town, which is being constructed within a series of A4 box-files. The concept is to produce a modular layout that is capable of being transported in even a small car.
This page is intended to show the ongoing stages of its development.

December 2022

The basic construction.

Six A4 box-files, creating 2 modules of three each.

It is intended to have a common entry/exit point in order that further modules might be inserted later.

The boxes have been reinforced with plywood bonded to the sides and base to add rigidity to the structure. A small timber

subframe has been added to allow the installation of point motors and wiring in a protected environment.

April 2023

After a pause in construction to allow the track plan to be finalised, and the track to be acquired.

The modules have been lined with cork sheet to deaden sound, and the first track sections laid in the fiddle yard module.

July 2023

Latest progress on the terminus module.

All track laid, points fitted and wired.

Platform (with operating lighting) positioned, and a selection of scenic items being tried for position.

Due to the height restriction of the box-file profile some of these may have to be removable, transported separately, and placed in position on set-up.

September 2023

As noted in the previous post, due to the height restrictions of a box-file profile, buildings other than the station, which has electrical connections, are to be made removable for transportation.

Further thoughts have led to the idea that some of these will be modular enabling changes of period or location.

First outing - GRES Exhibition at Northfleet

Taking the opportunity to show the layout under development to visitors to the show and talk about the modular concept behind it. It was generally well received, with some interesting conversations!

This was a good opportunity to test the running of the layout, identify any operational issues and spot improvements that could be applied.

All in all a successful weekend.

February 2024

Steady progress has been made since the GRES show in November and two auxiliary modules are now well under way. The control panel is nearing completion.

Here we have a few pictures of Bocksley Town station environs, and some of the factory module under development.
